Returning to Kim's Gym: Catch a Kid Doing Something Right

“Our character is what we do when we think no one is looking.” – H. Jackson Brown, Jr.

I love this idea so much—and I’ve been putting it into practice every week in the gym.

There’s something magical about catching a kid doing something right when they don’t think anyone’s watching. It’s one of the most powerful ways to build confidence.

So, what are you looking to catch?

You can catch them being kind.

You can catch them putting in extra effort.

You can catch them sticking a skill when they thought no one noticed—like that back

walkover you spotted out of the corner of your eye.

The key is: when you see something awesome—say something.

Celebrate it.

Cheer for it.

It takes five seconds and pays off in ways you may never fully realize.

Here’s what it looked like for me last week:

One of my 6-year-old boys has been working hard on his cartwheels. He’s definitely the least skilled kid in the group—and he knows it.

Last week, while I was working 1:1 with another child, I glanced over and saw him—for the first time—get his legs all the way up in the air.

I paused for just a few seconds and called out, “Charles, I saw that! And… that was awesome!”

He lit up.

And then he gave me the biggest, happiest, no-front-teeth smile. And then went right back to practicing—heart full, confidence rising.

Mine too.

Try it today. Catch someone doing something right.

It might just be the moment they remember most.
